Cheryl, a fifty-five year old professional woman presented to my clinical practice with complaints of vaginal dryness and painful urination. No longer was she interested in sex with her husband because it was painful. This is known as dyspareunia and the resultant low sexual desire was impacting her relationship.  The painful urination known as dysuria was also affecting her work life and general sense of well-being.

I explained to Cheryl that vaginal dryness and painful urination are both common occurrences for women during menopause. When estrogen levels decline at menopause the vaginal walls become thin and dry. Sex often becomes painful as does urination. Because we rarely talk about vaginal or bladder health, many women suffer in silence.

The combination of vaginal dryness, painful sex and painful urination are some of the symptoms of a condition called Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause or GSM.  When I mentioned low dose localized estrogen therapy as a treatment for GSM, Cheryl was less than excited.

She had a history of breast cancer in her family and was uncomfortable using any hormones. She also traveled extensively for her job so was more interested in a simpler fix.

I told Cheryl about a new novel procedure called the Mona Lisa Touch a laser therapy that consists of a series of three five minute treatments every six weeks performed by specialist doctors like gynaecologists in their medical offices.

Cheryl was excited to learn about the Mona Lisa Touch. The procedure does not require anaesthesia and has minimal side effects. The Mona Lisa Touch is such a simple procedure, it can be performed during a woman's lunch hour. Most women feel relief after only one treatment.

The Mona Lisa Touch has the ability to stimulate vaginal hydration and lubrication reducing symptoms of vaginal atrophy and dryness making sex enjoyable once again. The Mona Lisa Touch fit nicely with Cheryl's busy lifestyle and her desire to get back to the bedroom with her husband.
